Extraction systems for volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

All carbon-containing and readily vaporising materials are summarised under the term “VOCs”. Volatile organic materials with a boiling point of up to 200 °C are considered to be solvents. Volatile organic compounds enter the air when solvents vaporise and liquid or paste-like products dry off. These emissions can also occur independently of active working processes, e.g. from construction materials or leaking containers, maintenance, disinfection and cleaning products and tobacco smoke. Possible sources of volatile organic compounds in production halls include raw materials, paints and varnishes, adhesives and furniture.

Hazards from VOC emissions

Volatile organic compounds like perfume, "new car smell", outgassing of various construction materials, paints, furniture, glue or scented candles are basically everywhere and are well-known to us. It is actually anything we can smell. The concentration of these substances in rooms is generally low, so no health impairment is to be expected. However, where high concentrations of volatile organic compounds occur, their effects can be completely different: odour nuisance, respiratory tract and eye irritations, allergic reactions and even long-term effects such as cancer or mutagenic effects.

Requirements of VOC extraction systems

The total indoor concentration should be less than 0.3 mg/m³ on average. The German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA) has issued “Recommendations for indoor air” for some substances in the VOC category. Up to now, however, these are just recommendations.

Increased VOC concentrations can occur in particular when materials are processed wrongly or the wrong products are used. Industrial extraction and filtering systems reduce the risk of increased concentration or prevent it completely.
